I knew that there would be black volcanic beaches, with impressive waves crashing over the sands.

Now - this is the kind of Banksy-inspired graffiti artwork that I wholeheartedly approve of. It adds colour and atmosphere to an area, as well as providing focal interest. In fact, it is one of the best destinations for street art in Europe. Puerto de la Cruz in the North of Tenerife is an Atlantic city, attracting tourists from Europe and further afield.

4. Visit Museo Arquelógico de Puerto de la Cruz. Tucked away in one of the streets of the city centre, the Archaeological Museum of Puerto de la Cruz is inside a house that dates back to the 18th century. Inside, you can find various objects - from ceramics and cartography to Guanche mummies.

It remained in a peculiar limbo between idyllic beaches and striking urban art. There is the old and the new, the borrowed and the blue - all in all, Puerto de la Cruz is a place of many contrasts which makes it the perfect base on Tenerife's northern coast. When the waters are too rough, you can always go for a swim at the Parque Maritimo.

The Puerto Street Art project began in 2014 as part of the Festival Mueca, with murals painted by 5 artists. The second phase took place later in the year during the Festival Periplo, with murals painted by 8 Spanish artists.
