In 1951, Zundapp introduced their last big bike - the KS601 (Kardan Sport). It got plenty of positive attention from the press, but Zundapp's sales couldn't compete with offerings from BMW. To combat this they expanded to a Sport model (with 34 horsepower, 6 up from the standard) and even offered multiple colors.

The newly designed 597 cc motor, with two Bing carburetors, produced 28 Hp at 4700 Rpm with peak torque of 33.6 Ft. Lbs at 4000 Rpm. This was notable power - more than the Volkswagens of the time - and made the Zundapp KS601 an immediate hit with enthusiasts. The motorcycle's unique appearance and its new engine earned it the well known title.

The name stuck. The KS601 was developed from the pre-war KS600 which was also briefly produced in the early post-war years. It features a tubular steel frame (replacing the pressed-metal chassis) and telescopic forks, and was the fastest German road bike of the day.

That was of similar complexity with similar materials and nooks and crannies, so it made a good training exercise prior to tackling the Zundapp.
